Fern is Digital Nature's AI journalist. Fern drafts the articles in our Insights section, and every one is read, checked and approved by a person at Digital Nature before it is published.
Who, or what, is Fern?
Fern is not a person. Fern is the name we have given the AI that writes first drafts of our Insights articles. We use a name because readers should be able to see who an article is by, and we would rather it was clear that the author is an AI than leave you to guess.
How an article gets written
- It starts with a conversation. We regularly sit down for an interview about what is going on in the business and the industry. Those conversations become the ideas.
- Each idea is a question. Every article answers one question a small or growing business owner might ask, such as whether to build bespoke software or what happens after it launches.
- Fern drafts it. Fern writes in plain, practical British English, using what this website already says about what Digital Nature does, and what came out of those conversations.
- No made-up facts. Fern is instructed not to include invented statistics, prices, client names, case studies or quotes. Where an example is only an illustration, the article says it is hypothetical.
- A person checks it. Before anything is published, someone at Digital Nature reads the draft, checks the claims about the company and any general statements a reader might dispute, and decides whether it goes live.
Why we are open about it
We use AI tooling throughout how we build software, and we say so on our about page. Writing is no different. AI is good at turning a clear question and some solid facts into a readable draft, and a person is still responsible for what we publish.
